Biographical Note: William J. McGill (1873–1949) of Shelbyville, Tennessee, was the owner of the Shelbyville Harness Company and McGill Mills, and co-owner of the Robinson-McGill Harness Company. His papers show that his interest in horses specifically included study of bloodlines and general research.  He was a regular contributor to the Tennessee Walking Horse Magazine and was the first chairman of Blue Ribbon, a publication of the annual Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration.

Scope and Content: The McGill papers are arranged into four series: correspondence, research, equine genealogy, and photographs. The folders within each series are generally arranged chronologically. The correspondence series consists of both correspondence received and sent by McGill. This series is arranged chronologically by year. The research series is comprised of McGill’s own research for articles that he wrote. This research was most often equine-focused. The equine genealogy series is the genealogical research McGill produced on either specific horses or breeds in general. Photograph series consists of three photographs. The first two depict a mare and foal and the third is an image of William J. McGill, apparently copied from a publication. There is a duplicate copy of the image of McGill.

Associated Materials: The William J. McGill Papers contain three photographs housed with other photograph collections in the Albert Gore Research Center.
