Uncle Dave Macon was a local banjo player, performer and comedian. He was born October 7, 1870, and died March 22, 1952. Charles Wolfe, music historian, wrote of Uncle Dave Macon “If people call yodelling Jimmie Rodgers 'the father of country music,' then Uncle Dave must certainly be 'the grandfather of country music'.” Born in McMinnville, Uncle Dave later lived in Nashville, Readyville, and Kittrell. “Uncle Dave Macon Days,” an oldtime music and folk art festival held in Murfreesboro’s Cannonsburgh every July, is named for him.
