Biographical Note: The Tennessee Baptist State Convention founded Tennessee College in 1906. The college was chartered to educate women in both mind and spirit. The site chosen for Tennessee College was the location of the old Union University, located on Main Street in Murfreesboro. The trustees of Union University agreed in 1905 to transfer the property to Tennessee College and in September 1906 the cornerstone was laid. One year later, Tennessee College began classes with much excitement.

By 1909, Tennessee College had an enrollment of 253 students with four divisions: the Elementary school, the Preparatory school, the College, and the Conservatory. In 1923, Tennessee College was made a standard college by the Board of Trustees, giving it a stronger and more respectable academic base. After operating for forty-six years as Tennessee College for Women, the institution merged with Cumberland University in Lebanon with the financial backing of the Tennessee Baptist State Convention. By 1951, the Tennessee Baptist State Convention purchased Ward-Belmont school. From that point, Cumberland University resumed its Presbyterian status and the Tennessee College portion joined with Ward-Belmont school, now known as Belmont University.

According to Thomas Lowe, author of History of Tennessee College for Women, “the high ideas of Tennessee College for Women were given to a new school and to new students to be perpetuated forever.”

Florence Cox McFerrin of Murfreesboro presented portions of this collection to the Gore Research Center in 2000. Mrs. McFerrin graduated from Tennessee College for Women in 1936. She is currently a member of the Tennessee College for Women Alumnae Association.
