Summary/Abstract: The T. Earl Hinton Papers includes correspondence, policies, and miscellaneous documents related to the MTSU Faculty Senate from the years 1983-1986, as well as documents regarding the planning and implementation of MTSU’s 75th anniversary celebration that took place in 1986. Also included are papers of the State Board of Regents Academic Sub Council, the MTSU Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Board, and Dr. Hinton’s personal hand-written notes. These materials were collected by Dr. Hinton, music professor at MTSU, while he served on the Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Committee, and the Faculty Senate.

Biographical Note: A native of Clarksville, Tennessee, Dr. T. Earl Hinton graduated from George Peabody College in 1948, where he earned his undergraduate degree after service in the U.S. Army. He obtained his Master of Music degree in 1954 and his doctoral degree in 1969, both from Peabody College. He served as General Manager of the Nashville Symphony from 1952-54, timpanist with the Nashville Symphony from 1955-65, and music teacher in the Davidson County public schools from 1954-1960. In 1960, Dr. Hinton joined the faculty of MTSU (at the time Middle Tennessee State College). Dr. Hinton was a member of the music department faculty from 1960-1994. He also served on the Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Committee, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1983-1986. Dr. Hinton served on the Faculty Senate Steering Committee from 1984-1986 and presided as President of the Faculty Senate from 1985-1986.

An advocate for music education at all levels, he was an active member of the Tennessee Music Educators Association, receiving that organization’s Hall of Fame Award in 2004. During his career, he held the presidential office of the Tennessee Alliance for Arts Education, the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association, the Tennessee Music Educators Association, and the southern Division of Music Education National Conference.

On October 9, 2005, the T. Earl Hinton Music Hall in the school of music at Middle Tennessee State University was dedicated to honor Dr. Hinton’s years of service and dedication to music education.

Scope and Content: The T. Earl Hinton collection includes correspondence, policies, and miscellaneous documents related to the faculty senate from the years 1983-1986, as well as documents regarding the planning and implementation of MTSU’s 75th anniversary celebration that took place in 1986. The collection also includes papers of the State Board of Regents Academic Sub Council, the MTSU Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Board, and Dr. Hinton’s personal hand-written notes. These materials were collected by Dr. Hinton, music professor at MTSU, while he served on the Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Committee, and the Faculty Senate. The collection includes five series.

      The Faculty Senate Series (1984-1986) includes memos, agendas, and minutes of the MTSU faculty senate, faculty senate steering committee, faculty senate liaison committee, and faculty senate elections.

      The State Board of Regents Series (1985-1986) contains correspondence and documents of the State Board of Regents Academic Sub Council, and some items related to the Geier v. Alexander case.

      The Faculty Promotion and Tenure Review Committee Series (1976-1986) contains policy and committee correspondence. One file is restricted.

      The Faculty Concerns Series (1975-1986) contains documents related to salaries, retirement, the university’s grade appeals policy and other faculty topics.

      The Miscellaneous Series (1983-1987) contains information about the planning and implementation of MTSU’s 75th anniversary celebration, correspondence of Dr. Hinton, and photocopies of a few newspaper clippings collected by or sent to Dr. Hinton. Also included are university budgeting documents and notes, as well as Dr. Hinton’s handwritten notes on yellow legal pads.
