Title: Recollections: The Middle Tennessee Voices of Their Time Television Series and Records

Dates: 1980–2002

Creator: Bob Bullen and MTSU Television Services

Summary/Abstract: Recollections: The Middle Tennessee Voices of Their Time was a television series that aired on Middle Tennessee State University’s television channel beginning in 1983. MTSU Television Services produced the show, which was taped in Studio A of the Learning Resources Center on campus. Dr. Bob Bullen, a professor of education at MTSU, hosted the show and served as the interviewer in most episodes. Bullen also researched interviewees prior to each episode’s taping.

The purpose of the show was to compile a collection of firsthand accounts of historical events important to local and university history. Bullen planned to use the tapes to supplement classroom lectures. The goal of the television series was to provide an educational video archives that future students and teachers could use to supplement traditional classroom learning.

Arrangement: The Recollections: The Middle Tennessee Voices of their Time Television Series and Records are arranged into three series: interviews, research notes, and photographs.

Biographical Note: Dr. Bob Bullen was a professor of education at MTSU from 1969 to 2007. He received his B.S. (1962) and M.A. (1963) from the University of Tennessee, and his Ed. D. from the University of Alabama in 1969. He joined the MTSU faculty as an assistant professor of education in 1969. While at MTSU, he taught classes in youth education, school personnel services, education as a profession, and educational psychology, among others.

Scope and Content: The video recordings, documents, and photographs in this collection are arranged into three series: interviews, research notes, and photographs.

The interviews series consists of the video recordings produced by MTSU Audiovisual Services, Television Division. The master recordings are on Betamax and U-matic ¾ inch video cassettes. The McWherter Learning Resource Center copied the recordings to VHS cassettes, from which the Albert Gore Research Center has made viewing copies in DVD format.
With one exception, the interviews were originally produced as a part of the Recollections: The Middle Tennessee Voices of their Time television series. The interview of Sarah King was originally produced as a part of the “Jubilee Centennial Video Tape Project” of the Centennial Jubilee Committee of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and later repurposed as an episode of Recollections.

The Research Notes series consists of notes compiled by Dr. Bob Bullen to prepare for interviews on the show. The files are separated by interview topic and arranged alphabetically by title. Most of the files pertain to specific interviewees, but some are general topics. These files contain news clippings, partial scripts, and handwritten notes pertaining to the episode’s topic.

The Photographs series consists of images pertaining to interviewees. Photographs 001 through 017 are related to the Ellen Stokes Wemyss interview, but were not used in the program. Photographs 018 through 028 were used in the Fred Russell episode of Recollections, while photograph 029 was not.
