Biographical Note: The Oaklands Association was formed in 1959 to preserve the Oaklands historic house in Murfreesboro, TN. Oaklands was built by Dr. James Maney and his wife Sallie around 1813. Sallie Maney was the daughter of Colonel Hardee Murfree, after whom the town of Murfreesboro was named. Oaklands began as a small two-room house but had several additions made to it throughout the 19th century. Oaklands evolved into a plantation mansion during the antebellum period and was the site of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s raid on Union troops on July 13, 1862. In 1958 the city of Murfreesboro purchased the vacant mansion and surrounding property. Oaklands was unfortunately in terrible shape due to several years of neglect and vandalism. Shortly after the city purchased the property, they planned to demolish the mansion and build low income housing units on the property. After the Oaklands Association was formed in response to the city’s plan, it started a campaign to save the historic mansion. The Association worked out a plan with the city that would deed the mansion to the Association, provided the Association restore the mansion and have it open to the public within ten years. If this agreement was not kept, the mansion’s ownership would revert back to the city. The dedication of the women in the Association, along with financial support from various local sources, resulted in Oaklands being opened to the public in the early 1960s.
