Biographical Note: Neil and Margaret Wright worked in the Music Department at Middle Tennessee State College (MTSC). Neil Wright was the head of the music department and the Professor of Voice and Choral Activities. He worked in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees at Peabody College. While a professor at MTSC, he was also the president of the East Tennessee Vocal Association, the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association, and the Tennessee Music Teacher Association, as well as a member of the Tennessee Arts Commission, Music Teachers National Association, and the American Association of University Professors. He was also a concert and marching band director at MTSC and Bristol, Tennessee High School, an oratio soloist, a church choir director, and a professional trumpet player. He was married to Margaret Johnson Wright.

Margaret Johnson Wright received her B.A. from Vanderbilt University and her F.A. from Peabody College. She was also a Red Cross volunteer during World War II. She was the organ professor at MTSC beginning in 1946. She was also the director of the MTSC Sacred Harp Singers which made appearances in Washington, D.C., Cincinnati, Tallahassee, Atlanta, and throughout Tennessee. She was also dean of the Nashville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. In 1964, she won Tennessee’s Outstanding Musician of the Year. Mrs. Wright also wrote the textbook “Developing Musicianship.”

Scope and Content: The collection includes Band of Blue newsletters, and programs for the Sacred Harp Singers, Faculty Recital, and the Varsity Choir. Also included are photocopies of pages from the Wright Memory Book, and photographs. These documents are arranged in folders by description and then date in boxes 1 and 2. Box 3 includes “Developing Musicianship” by Margaret J. Wright and a locket belonging to Mrs. Wright.
