Summary/Abstract: Middle Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 after the Tennessee General Assembly approved the General Education Bill of 1909. This act established a Normal School in each of Tennessee’s grand divisions. In 1925, the General Assembly authorized the maintenance of a State Teachers College in each of the grand divisions. At this time, the Middle Tennessee Normal School was authorized to award the four-year Bachelor of Science degree and was renamed the Middle Tennessee State Teachers College (MTSTC).

The primary goal of MTSTC was to train elementary and high school teachers, instructors of special subjects, and school administrators. The college emphasized professional training, mixing classroom instruction with teaching experience. In the MTSTC era, the College occupied 250 acres of land and expanded from ten to fifteen buildings. In 1943, the General Assembly changed the name of MTSTC to Middle Tennessee State College.
