Acquisition: The donor of this collection is not known. The papers were received prior to July 1999.

Processed By: Original processor undetermined. Finding aid revision by Natalie Goodwin, graduate assistant (March 21, 2011).

Arrangement: The documents in this collection are arranged in six series: education, miscellaneous, religion, Sam Davis Development Corporation, Sam Davis Home, and theatre. Within each series are sub-series arranged in alphabetical order.

Biographical Note: In the early 1940s, Lane and Marguerite (Margie) Boutwell met while performing in an undergraduate play at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.  During World War II, Lane was stationed at Sewart Air Force Base in Smyrna. After the war the family moved to Illinois where Lane completed his Ph.D. at Northwestern and Margie graduated from the National College of Education. The Boutwells also had two children, Richard and Gill.

Lane Boutwell joined the Middle Tennessee State College faculty in 1947, and served as a member of the English and Speech and Theatre departments until his retirement in 1974.  He was largely responsible for the development of the speech and theatre curriculum, served as the department’s first chairman, directed several Buchanan Dramatic Club Players productions, and sponsored the forensics program that had a reputation for producing stellar debate teams. In 1982, the Dramatic Arts Building at MTSU was renamed the Lane Boutwell Dramatic Arts Building.  In 1971, Lane was an MTSU Outstanding Teacher and became Professor Emeritus in 1992.

In 1972, Marguerite Boutwell retired from Campus School where she had taught kindergarten and first grade.  Additionally, Marguerite was one of the initiators of kindergarten in Tennessee.

Scope and Content: The bulk of the Boutwell papers cover the period from 1947 to 1970 and relate to Lane Boutwell’s tenure as a professor in the English and Speech and Theatre Departments or Marguerite Boutwell’s involvement in early childhood education. Other materials in the collection pertain to Sunday school curriculum, the Sam Davis Development Corporation’s documents related to Meadow Brook subdivision in Smyrna, and the Sam Davis Home.

The papers measure approximately 8.5 linear feet. The Boutwell papers contain blueprints, notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, books, and pamphlets collected by Lane and Margie Boutwell. The donor’s original order has been maintained as much as possible. The papers are organized topically and arranged alphabetically in the following series: education, miscellaneous, religion, Sam Davis Development Corporation, Sam Davis Home, and theatre.   The Boutwell papers also contain scrapbooks and photographs of Middle Tennessee State College theatre productions and Gill Boutwell’s 4-H activities.

Associated Materials: Photographs from the Boutwell papers are stored separately.
