Biographical Note: John Hood is a resident of Murfreesboro, TN where he has been active in the community for most of his 78 years. Born in Rutherford County to Emil and Christine Hood in 1931, he attended Crithalow Elementary, Central High School and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a master’s degree in education and bachelor degree in social sciences. Hood received his B.S. in 1954 and his M.Ed. in 1974. He also worked at MTSU for 10 years, from 1966 to 1976, first as the director of development and later as administrative assistant to University President Melvin G. Scarlett.

Upon leaving the university, Hood began a career in broadcasting. While working at WMTS and WGNS, both in Murfreesboro, Hood experienced the full spectrum of duties involved with radio broadcast, but received the most fulfillment from his time reporting the news. “When I was in radio, I got to cover the visit of General Douglas Macarthur,” Hood said. “His wife, Jean Marie Faircloth, was from Murfreesboro and… they came home for a visit. I covered the luncheon and ceremony for them at MTSU.”

When Samsonite first opened in 1960, the company took over 5,000 applications from the local populations, as job opportunities in Rutherford County were scarce at the time. Hood was fortunate to serve as personnel director at Samsonite for five years, until he obtained a position at SunTrust Bank as the Vice President of Marketing, which he held for over 20 years. With the exception of a two-year stint in the army, Hood has benefited from working in Rutherford County all his life.

Hood’s first experience in politics came in 1966 when, on the heels of a legal ruling that changed the county commission, the people elected him to the Rutherford County Commission, where he served for ten years. After John Bragg had decided not to run for State Representative, Hood says, “he asked me if I was interested.” Very interested, Hood ran for and won election as a Tennessee State Representative for the 48th District. After winning re-election six times, he decided to follow his predecessor, Bragg, and not seek a seventh term as the Democratic representative from Tennessee, saying, “it’s time to move on and let someone else give it a try.”

Bowing out of the political arena, Hood accepted an offer from MTSU President Sidney McPhee in 2008. Hood currently works out of the Office of Community Engagement and Support, headed by Dr. Gloria Bonner.
