The poems, short stories, and most of the articles were written by Joe Nunley, former student of Middle Tennessee State Teachers’ College and former Director of Alumni Relations at Middle Tennessee State University. Other articles are about Joe Nunley. Correspondence was written by former faculty members of Middle Tennessee who shared memories of Joe Nunley and planned a memorial in his honor.

Arrangement: The Joe Nunley, Sr. Memorial Committee Papers are arranged in eight series within two boxes. The series are: Correspondence, News Clippings and Articles, Newsletters, Poems and Short Stories, Invitations, Photographs, Miscellaneous, and Audiovisual.

Biographical Note: Joe Nunley was a former student of Middle Tennessee State Teachers College (MTSTC) and Director of Alumni Relations at MTSU. He recalled his experiences as a student at MTSTC in his book The Raider Forties (also available at the Gore Research Center). After his death in 1993, former friends and colleagues of MTSU formed the Joe Nunley, Sr. Memorial Committee with the intent of collecting correspondence as well as poems and short stories written by Joe Nunley to his colleagues. These papers were donated to the Albert Gore Research Center in 1995.

Scope and Content: The papers are dated 1942-1994, and are arranged in eight series. Correspondence Series (1979-1994, 19 folders) makes up the largest part of the papers and includes correspondence between Joe Nunley and other faculty members at MTSU. The series also includes correspondence between faculty members discussing plans for the Joe Nunley Memorial. The News Clippings and Articles Series (1960-1994, 5 folders) includes clippings from newspapers that were either written by Joe Nunley, or discuss Joe Nunley. The Newsletters Series consists of one folder with an issue of “Bugle” dated 1966. The Poems and Short Stories Series (1979-1996, 9 folders) includes poems and short stories written by Joe Nunley. The Invitations Series (1973-1991, 2 folders) includes invitations to various events at MTSU. The Photographs Series (1942-1944, 1993; 3 folders) includes photographs of Joe Nunley, MTSU, and Murfreesboro. The Miscellaneous Series (1993, 1 folder) includes a funeral eulogy and service program for Joe Nunley. The Audiovisual Series (1985, 2 folders) includes a video tape of Joe Nunley at the Harold Smith Roast and a cassette tape entitled “Old Folks and Stuff, Joe Nunley.”

Related Collections: There are no related collections. However, the Albert Gore Research Center also has a copy of Joe Nunley’s The Raider Forties. The book recalls the experiences of Joe Nunley and his classmates at Middle Tennessee State Teacher’s College.
