Biographical Note: Sergeant James Calvin Hollon donated his World War II related materials to the Albert Gore Research Center in November 2005. A Nashville native, Mr. Hollon served in World War II at the young age of nineteen in Company M, 129th Infantry/29th Division. He fought on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day, aiding in the invasion of France and the rescue of its citizens from the Axis Powers. His participation in this globally consequential event never escaped his thoughts; throughout the remainder of his life, Mr. Hollon collected various articles and publications dealing with the Normandy landings in particular and World War II in general. Honored as a local hero, this retired military man passed away in March 2006 at the age of 81.

Scope and Content: Items in the James C. Hollon Papers include magazines, newspapers, magazine and newspaper article clippings, war memorial promotional items, photographs, ration stamps, and various correspondence, as well as maps, videos, and posters. The Subject Files make up the majority of these papers and consist of published histories, personal recollections, and commemorative materials, particularly pertaining to modern commemoration efforts like anniversaries, monuments and memorials, primarily dating from the 1980s. A small portion of primary sources, however, date as far back as the 1940s. The magazines and newspapers deal with World War II history and veterans’ affairs, including current events affecting veterans and recollections of War. The books in the collection, with publication dates from 1958 to 2003, deal with war-stricken 1940s France.

Associated Materials: There are several posters from this collection stored in Oversize MD 12. Mr. Hollon created two of the posters in this series from photographs that he took during a commemorative trip back to Europe. Personal recollections caption these two beautiful pictures of Omaha Beach and the American Military Cemetery in Normandy, France. Two posters, one detailing the events at Omaha Beach on D-Day and the other a roster of Hollon’s military division, are also in this series.
