Biographical Note: Eugene Holloway Sloan was born on September 14, 1907. He was a native of Lebanon, Tennessee, and served as a high school teacher, a principal, and a city superintendent of schools. He began his journalism career as a teenage reporter for the Lebanon Democrat and later was a “stringer” for the Nashville Banner. His by-lined column “Somewhere in Tennessee” was the basis for the book on World War II maneuvers. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Tennessee State Guard and was later accredited as a war correspondent by the U.S. Army.

By the end of World War II, Sloan served as interim state editor of the Nashville Banner. Sloan also received a degree in law and became a member of the Tennessee State Bar Association. In 1946, Sloan became a professor of Business Law and director of Public Relations at Middle Tennessee State College in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He also was chair of the MTSU Athletic Committee for over 20 years and worked with Coach Murphy to get MTSU into the Ohio Valley Conference. After serving the university for 28 years, Sloan retired in 1974. He died on May 21, 1997.

Sloan was married to Lillian White of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They had four children, Gene Jr., Joseph White, William H., and Anne Twining.

Sloan was the author of many publications including Personages in American History and With Second Army: Somewhere in Tennessee, which provides a history of World War II maneuvers in Tennessee. In addition, he was a contributing author to numerous college textbooks on business law and journalism that were published by the Pittman Publishing Company. He was also a member of the committee that wrote A History of Wilson County, Tennessee.

Scope and Content: The Sloan Papers include letters, photographs, articles, and personal journals, as well as materials related to MTSU faculty. They are divided into five series:

“Ivory Tower” Articles, 1978-1980 includes articles written by various professors and members of the MTSU community. The articles were part of the “Ivory Tower” column, but they appeared in editorial pages in various publications such as the Crossville Chronicles, Sevier County News, and The Daily Herald. The topics range from commentaries on various departmental roles in the college or university setting to discussions on certain subjects in various academic disciplines. Some of the topics covered in the series are: history, art, foreign languages, library studies, economics and political science. Date range has been determined based on the content matter of the papers. This series makes up box 1 of the collection.

Boxes 2 and 3 contain Personal Journals, 1960-1987.These journals include a day-by-day account of thoughts, insights and important events written and experienced by Sloan during the years 1960-1987.

Boxes 4 and 5 include MTSU People, 1968-1970. This series provides brief biographical sketches, articles, letters, and press releases on professors, past presidents and other faculty/staff members of the university. Some interesting materials that are included in the files are programs from past inaugurations, dedications, and resumes.

Box 7 makes up Aerospace, 1967-1970. During the late 1960s, Sloan collected information regarding the Aerospace and Aviation department at MTSU. These files include programs of the Aerospace Education Workshops that were held on the MTSU campus. The files also include photographs and memorabilia of European countries from the Aerospace International Education Workshop in 1967.

Memorabilia, 1960-1970 is located in box 8 and includes a variety of materials that were collected by Eugene Sloan. Some of the items are colored slides on various Rutherford County Houses, an M.T.S.C. stamper, a Tangerine Bowl tape, a Gene Sloan clip and a movie reel.

Miscellaneous A-Z, 1943-1993 is found in box 6, and contains a varied assortment of items that were collected by Sloan. Some of the materials included in this series are press releases regarding university events, information on General Douglas MacArthur’s unit in the 1950s, and various articles on the 2nd Army Maneuvers in Tennessee during the years 1943-1944. This series includes the book written by Eugene Sloan entitled With Second Army: Somewhere in Tennessee. The book is about World War II maneuvers in Tennessee. Also included is a genealogy and childhood history written by Eugene Sloan entitled Remembering When – From Newtown Pennsylvania to Lebanon Tennessee.

Associated Materials: The Sloan Papers include photographs of WWII maneuvers taken by Sloan. They are stored separately in the Photograph Collections in the Albert Gore Research Center.

Related Collections: When the collection was first processed, some of Sloan’s materials were moved to other University collections because they related to various series in those collections. Some of the items moved include MTSU Football Programs and the 1970s campus telephone directories.
