Biographical Note: Ernest Hooper was born in Rutherford County, and graduated from Middle Tennessee State Teacher’s College in 1942 with his B.A. degree. After participating in the Navy during World War II, Hooper completed his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. He then went on to teach at Lemoyne College, a small African American school in Memphis. He also married Grier McQuiston in 1950. In 1960, he returned to Middle Tennessee State College to teach History. He was later a member of the Faculty Senate and the board of the Tennessee Retirement System. After retiring, he moved to Huntsville, Alabama and prepared income tax returns for the elderly community at St. Clair Street Senior Center.

Scope and Content: The Hooper Papers consist of correspondence, self-studies, faculty senate reports, and news clippings related to Hooper’s work with the university and the history department. The materials are arranged into six boxes. Box one covers memos, reports, class schedules, and Raider Resources newsletters. Box two includes notes and self-studies of university faculty. Box three includes faculty senate reports. Box four includes committee memos and reports. Box five includes correspondence with faculty members. Box six includes brochures, newspaper clippings, and memos covering building dedication ceremonies, newspaper clippings, and personnel policies.
